A compact complete blood count analyzer that combines optical imaging, micro-volume fluidics and a precision scanning gantry in a 1 ft × 1 ft unit of about 5 kg. I led its design through production. More than 50 units shipped to hospitals and labs, at 10× lower cost per test.
The product
A complete blood count (CBC) analyzer for hospitals and diagnostic labs. It brings together optical imaging, micro-volume liquid handling, a high-precision gantry that scans the sample, and automated consumable handling, all in a 1 ft × 1 ft unit that weighs about 5 kg.
What I led
Over three years I led the design end to end: system architecture and component selection, DFM and DFA for cost, the supply chain, and the assembly workflow that took it into production.
Results
- More than 50 analyzers shipped to hospitals and diagnostic labs.
- 10× lower cost per test through DFX-driven design.
- An assembly workflow that produces 20+ analyzers a day with a five-person team.
- FDA and CDSCO documentation prepared for a Class II medical device.
Built in-house
Two parts of the platform replaced expensive third-party equipment:
- Micro-volume syringe pump: 0.1 µL aspiration accuracy, built in three months.
- Reagent filling and sealing machine: 4,500 test kits a day, built in one month.
